“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”

And we agree with Aristotle. At Everest Customer Solutions, we believe that experience is often the best teacher. That’s why we offer internships every summer and winter. Our interns can shape their experience in collaboration with our leadership and team. They get the opportunity to work on customer projects, gaining real-world experience and building relationships with colleagues and customers alike.

Some of our former interns – Eric Nordstrom, Jake Matier, and Ryan Wilson – shared their stories with us from their experience with Everest Customer Solutions.

Summer Internship Quote 1

Eric Nordstrom was nearing the end of his first year at Drexel University and saw a post about a summer internship opportunity at Everest Customer Solutions on the College of Computing and Informatics’ bulletin board. Everest’s office location was close to his hometown, so he knew it would be a perfect first internship.

At Everest, Eric was a developer through and through. He spent most of his time working with the project manager and stakeholders to understand the problem space and gather requirements. From there, he worked with the IT Admin to deploy solutions and gain feedback from customers.

Of his major learnings from the internship, Eric says, “Intern, Engineering Lead, CVP, CEO – titles don’t really matter, each person has a unique perspective that can contribute to accomplishing a project. Everest showed me this by having a small team of people with various degrees of experience and seniority that allows a variety of lenses in which to view a problem.”

Following his internship at Everest, his career was catapulted. At Everest, he gained engineering experience that opened the door to numerous other internships. He returned to Everest as a C#/JS Developer in his third year at Drexel. Upon graduation, he was able to enter Microsoft as a very strong candidate with professional skills beyond his peers.

But his favorite part of the internship? The food. “I’m not sure it’s possible to work at Everest without having a deep appreciation of food or acquiring a deep appreciation of food during your tenure. Whether it be a burger or foie gras, I’ve never worked for a company or been apart of a team where food was so deeply engrained in the culture,” Eric says. “I can’t say I joined Everest as a food aficionado, but I certainly left as one.”

Summer Internship Quote 2

Jacob Matier learned about internship opportunities at Everest during a conversation with managing partner Greg Umstead at a community lacrosse event. He joined the team that summer as an intern focused on data analytics.

He worked on various projects, including one that involved developing a Tableau dashboard for a large pharmaceutical customer and verifying it using SQL queries. Another involved developing a Microsoft PowerBI dashboard for a pharmaceutical proof-of-concept project. Jacob also developed project documentation for several database application projects and assisted the system testing team for a business intelligence application for a top life sciences data provider.

Through his internship, Jacob learned how to work on a team that is committed to providing the best output for their customers. He learned most of his technical skills as an intern and said the team was most than willing to teach him new skills that could be applied to future projects.

Jacob’s internship with Everest had a positive impact on the next steps in his career by exposing him to challenging projects with exciting outcomes. “I was involved in projects that were intriguing to me and provided me with the opportunity to expand my experience and knowledge within those areas.”

His favorite part of working at Everest was the people. He always looked forward to company dinners and daily lunch breaks with everyone.

Summer Internship Quote 3

Ryan Wilson was in his junior year of college when a family friend told him about internship opportunities at Everest. He began working with our in-house Azure manager, primarily on researching tools and information about Microsoft Azure to tailor it better towards our needs.

About halfway through his internship, Ryan switched to a more analytical role and was involved in report design and development. He developed an understanding of both the back and front-end of reporting for different-sized companies.

Ryan’s greatest takeaway from the internship was the importance of teamwork in a professional setting. “I know that I am able to depend on my coworkers if I ever need assistance,” he said. “There are always people in the company who are willing and able to help you.”

Following his internship, Ryan joined the Everest team full-time as a business analyst. He’s continued to grow his reporting and analytics capabilities and uses his PowerBI experience from his internship to help develop dashboards for various customers.

As Ryan’s internship took place during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, he completed most of his internship virtually. His favorite part of the internship was the daily morning huddle we implemented and wrote about in our blog Work-From-Home – One Year Later.
